How long does it take to drive to Mount Teide?
From Playa de las Américas, the drive to the cable-car base station (about 50 km) takes roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on traffic and stops.
Can a small hire car make it up the mountain?
Yes. Small petrol cars manage the climb fine; you just use lower gears and higher revs to make up for the power lost in the thin altitude air.
Is the road to Teide ever closed by snow?
Yes. Between roughly December and March the access roads can be closed for snow and ice. Always check the official @carreterastf feed before you leave the coast.
Do I need to book the cable car in advance?
Booking online at volcanoteide.com is the safest way to secure a time slot. The base-station car park is free but fills early in summer.
Is there a fee to visit Teide National Park?
Driving through the park is free. However, an eco-fee for specific trails has been announced for 2026, so check the Tenerife ON website for the latest rules before you go.
Do I need a hire car in Playa de las Américas?
Not to enjoy the resort itself — the beaches, promenade and Verónicas strip are all walkable. A hire car is for the rest of the island: Mount Teide, Masca, the north coast and the quieter southern beaches the buses skip.
Which firms offer zero-excess car hire?
The Canary operators — Cicar, Cabrera Medina and Autoreisen — build full zero-excess cover into their headline rate with little or no deposit, which is why so many returning visitors book a local firm over an airport budget brand.
Do I need an IDP with a UK licence?
No. A UK photocard driving licence is valid in Spain and you do not need an International Driving Permit. Just remember that you drive on the right.
Is parking difficult in the resort?
Parking is the real local headache because the seafront is pedestrianised. Our guide to parking in Playa de las Américas explains the free streets, the blue-zone rules and the paid car parks.
Is petrol cheaper than in the UK?
Yes. The Canary Islands charge the local IGIC tax instead of mainland VAT, so petrol is noticeably cheaper than UK pump prices — fill up inland rather than at the airport perimeter for the best rate.
Is there free parking in Playa de las Américas?
Yes — in white-lined bays and on the large unpaved ground by the Antonio Domínguez stadium. You usually need to arrive before 10:30 to find a space.
What does a blue line mean when parking?
A blue line marks a paid zona azul bay. Buy a ticket from a nearby machine or use a cardboard parking disc. Rates are around 1.20 euros an hour, usually with a one- to two-hour limit.
Can I drive to my beachfront hotel?
No. The immediate seafront is pedestrianised. If your hotel is on the promenade you park at the drivable boundary and walk your luggage in, or you risk a fine from the local police.
Where should I park if I am driving to Mount Teide early?
A secure underground car park such as the Safari Centre is ideal the night before driving to Mount Teide, so you can set off early without hunting for a space at dawn.
Will the low-emission zone affect my hire car?
No. The planned zone in Arona's 'milla de oro' will not restrict a modern hire car, which carries the DGT environmental sticker required to enter, and it is not yet enforced.
How far is Tenerife South Airport from Playa de las Américas?
About 17 km, which is a straightforward 15 to 20 minute drive along the toll-free TF-1 motorway.
Which motorway exit should I take for the resort?
Take Exit 73. Be careful not to miss it: Exit 72 leads to Los Cristianos and Exit 74 to Costa Adeje. If you overshoot, drive on to the next junction to double back.
Do I need a credit card for the deposit?
It depends on the firm. Local Canary operators like Cicar, Cabrera Medina and PlusCar often take debit cards and charge no excess or deposit. Budget international brands usually block a credit-card deposit of 1,000 to 1,400 euros unless you buy their excess waiver.
Can I use a standard UK driving licence?
Yes. A UK photocard licence is fully valid for hiring and driving a car in Spain. You do not need an International Driving Permit.
What if my flight lands at Tenerife North instead?
Tenerife North (TFN) is about 75 to 80 km away on the opposite side of the island — over an hour by road — so check which airport you are flying into before you book your pickup.
Is parking free at Siam Park?
Parking inside the Siam Park car park costs about 7 euros a day. You can instead use the free public parking 500 to 600 m away by the Magma centre or Siam Mall, or take the free shuttle bus that runs from points around the resort.
Do I need a hire car to go whale watching?
Most trips leave from nearby Puerto Colón, but a hire car makes it far easier to reach the harbour for an early-morning departure, when the seas are calmest.
Can I still drive to Masca village?
Yes. You can still drive the TF-436 up to Masca village to look around, take photos and eat, with no booking needed. The parking ban and shuttle apply only to people hiking the regulated Masca Gorge trail.
Which beach near the resort is easiest for parking?
Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje is a good choice for drivers: there is a free car park behind Caleta Coast plus underground parking at Plaza del Duque, where the first hour is free.
Can I drive back after a night on the Verónicas strip?
No. Spain's drink-drive limits are strict and set near zero for 2026. If you plan to drink, leave the hire car at your accommodation and use the plentiful resort taxis instead.
